About us

What is the Berlin Museumsportal?

The Berlin Museumsportal is the joint website of all Berlin’s museums, memorials, palaces and collections. It is the central point where you can find information on all these institutions, together with links to their own websites.

Which museums have a presence on the museumsportal?

All of Berlin’s around 140 museums are present on the museumsportal, including the world-famous buildings on the Museum Island. There are also a few exhibition galleries which cooperate closely with the museums. Berlin’s memorials are also fully represented on the portal. The palaces include not only those in Berlin, but also the palaces in Potsdam and the Mark Brandenburg administered by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg.

What information can be found on the museumsportal?

Under Museums you can find addresses, brief descriptions, opening times, admission prices, directions for how to get there and much additional information on all 200 institutions included on the portal. Under Exhibitions you can find out about all the current exhibitions in these museums as well as forthcoming ones. Under Events, guided tours, discussions, workshops and other events taking place in Berlin’s museums are announced, with a complete listing of all events taking place in the 16 locations belonging to the National Museums in Berlin. You can find the events directly in the listings for the museums and exhibitions as well as by searching via the Calendar.

What else does the museumsportal offer?

On the museumsportal you can also read reviews of selected exhibitions, find out about the main topics with which the exhibitions are concerned and learn interesting facts about certain objects in the collections. The Announcements keep you up to date with the latest news from the Berlin museums scene and about special events. These documents are currently only available in German.

Under the menu item Visitor Service you can find a wealth of practical hints for your museum visit, from special day-tickets and evening opening times to admission-free days. From the start of each quarter you can also find details of all guided tours being offered over the following three months for children, young people and families, as well as people with disabilities.

What does the Shop offer?

In the museumportal’s Shop you can order online all the publications produced by the National Museums in Berlin and other selected catalogues. The quarterly MuseumsJournal is also available.
From the middle of each December and July, tickets are available in the Shop for the Long Nights of Museums.

Who produces the Museumsportal?

A great many partners are involved in producing the Berlin Museumsportal. The museums regularly provide details of their exhibitions and events. The editorial team at the state-owned Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH supplement these details, write the articles and announcements and bring together all the information on all the museums under the ‘Visitor Service’ heading. They update information on provision for children and people with disabilities and give hints for museum visits, for instance during the summer months. They also produce a newsletter, which comes out every one to two months.

The portal’s operator, x:hibit GmbH, ensures the smooth technical functioning of the website. It developed the input mask for the museums and the interfaces to the databases of the National Museums in Berlin and other portals. It is also responsible for the shop.

How did the Museumsportal come about?

The impetus to set up a joint portal for all Berlin’s museums came from the state initiative ‘Projekt Zukunft’ (Project Future) in the Berlin Senate Administration for Economic Affairs, Technology and Women. The Senate Administration also financed the setting up of the website, which went online in January 2008. The concept was developed jointly by the operator and the editorial team, with the support of representatives of the Berlin museums, in the Museumsportal working group.

On what other portals are the museumsportal’s data available?

All exhibitions and events on the museumsportal are forwarded via interface to BerlinOnline Stadtportal GmbH & Co and published on Berlin's official Internet site www.Berlin.devisitBerlin, the portal for visitors to Berlin, also uses the exhibition details from the museumsportal – in German and English. Creative City Berlin, Berlin’s portal for the cultural sector and the creative industries, obtains its museums information from here. Interfaces to more portals and editorial teams are being planned, which means that the museumsportal will in the future be the central database for Berlin’s museums and exhibitions.
