In spring 2005, the Akademie der Künste opened its new building designed by Behnisch & Parnters on Pariser Platz, close to the Brandenburg Gate. It shows art and document exhibitions and temporary installations, as well as academy talks, concerts, lectures, films, theatre, and dance performances. Integrated into the new building are the renovated skylit galleries of 1906, where Max Liebermann once exhbited his work. The groundfloor has a shopping passage, a bistro, and a bookshop.
Founded in 1696, the Akademie der Künste in Berlin is one of the oldest European cultural institutes. It was the precursor of the Berlin art and music academies, held the first public exhibitions of art, and co-founded the rich museum landscape in Berlin.
