In the years from 1945 to 1990, the city of Berlin was divided into four zones of occupation, administered by the USA, Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France: the victorious powers of World War II. The Allied Museum is located in the center of the former U.S. sector. Both the U.S. military government and the Supreme Command of the Berlin Brigade were headquartered on the opposite side of Clayallee. The buildings taken over by the museum bear witness to the U.S. and thus the Allied presence in Berlin. The Outpost Theater was built by the U.S. army in 1952/53 and now houses exhibitions which focus on the period directly after the war and the occupation. At the centre is the story of the Berlin airlift of 1948/49. In the Nicholson Memorial Library, built in 1979, is the scond part of the permanent exhibition and also current special exhbitions.
Among the most prominent exhibits are the last sentry box from Checkpoint Charlie, a British "Hastings" aircraft form the time of the airlift and the Berlin espionage tunnel.
