For the trains, the infrastructure, and the rails of the Berliner S-Bahn (Berlin Railway) get up to date constantly, technical equipment is taken out of service regularly, stations get renamed, or the contents or the design of the timetables get changed. These innumerable big and small things vanishing from every day life get collected, since 1980, from members of the association Berliner Fahrgastverbandes IGEB e.V. In 1997, the disused objects found a new home at the museum Berliner S-Bahn-Museum. It is located in the former railway transformer station Griebnitzsee; here, in the past, the big transformer stations and equalizers were which provided the power for the railway.
The exhibition is applied, on the one hand, to the technology by displaying various types of signals, ticket printing machines, and rail profiles. An electro-mechanic signal box in all its separate parts can be studied as well. On the other hand, it shows an aspect of the culture and social history of Berlin via signs of former station names, or by a workplace of a railway employee. Boards document the history of the Berlin railway and do also show the different developments in East and West Berlin.
Many objects, such as a driving simulator, are still in working order and can be tried out by the visitors.
