In 1762, the court jeweller and coin trader Veitel Heine Ephraim bought the property Mühlendamm/Ecke Poststraße and commissioned the master builder Friedrich Wilhelm Diterichs to reconstruct it.
The Palais was seen, quite early, by the people, as the "Berlin´s most beautiful corner“. Diterichs used the corner position in a clever way, by linking the two wings meeting in an obtuse angle aesthetically. Free-standing Tuscan columns and pilasters with a dome give the multi-storey facade a clear vertical structure, balconies with gilded bars and gay putti gave it a decorative note. Extended from 1892 to 1895, the Palais was demolished in 1936 for the laying out of the enlarged Mühlendamm street. From 1985 to 1987, during the reconstruction of the Nikolaiviertel, the Palais was rebuilt nearby its original site. Hereby, original parts of the facade were used. With it´s the light oval staircase was reconstructed, the stairs climbing up elegantly in a spiral, and the majestic stairs are an especially beautiful example for baroque interior design.
Today, the rococo Palais offers, on three floors, special exhibitions on the art history and cultural history of Berlin. Furthermore, here is also the Graphische Sammlung of the Stadtmuseum, with about 90,000 sheets, from the late 17th century till today.
