About four million people left the German Democratic Republic (GDR) heading for the Federal Republic of Germany (FGR) between 1949 and 1990. 1.35 millions of them passed through the refugee transit camp in Berlin-Marienfelde established in 1953. Here, supported by German and allied offices, they were accommodated, cared, and sent to the federal states of Germany.
Today, the exhibition "Flight in the divided Germany" reminds of this extraordinary chapter of the German history and of these individual life stories. On about 450 square meters, and with more than 900 exhibits, it invites you to seek about the reasons, the course, and the consequences of the flight movement: Why did the individual took the decision to leave his/her home in the GDR? How did he/she cross the border, and how was the reception in the "Golden West"?
Besides the permanent exhibition, the memorial site Notaufnahmelager Marienfelde (Marienfelde Refugee Centre) offers regularly special exhibitions and a multifarious event and education program.
