Founded in 1850/51, the Berlin fire brigade is the oldest professional fire brigade in Germany. The basis for its own museum was already set in 1912. Since 1983, the Feuerwehrwehrmuseum Berlin (Fire Service Museum) is located at the fire station Feuerwache Tegel. The exhibition tells the history of the Berlin fire brigade starting from fire-fighting in the time of the first fire regulations around 1650 until today. Here, one can see, with equipment, models, photos, and films, how the organisation, tactics, and technical equipment of the fire brigade have developed.
The museum is often visited by school classes, kindergarten groups, and members of associations. At the guided tour, the visitors can experience, with functioning historical fire alarm, what happened when the fire brigade was alarmed. At a room with special equipment, they can undergo a health check passed by fire brigade men in former times.
Since 2005, there is a special exhibit in front of the fire brigade museum: the first rescue helicopter used in Berlin, a BO 105. From 1987 on it flew first under American flag in West-Berlin, then, since 1990, at the whole municipal area.
About 20 historical vehicles are also part of the collection; they can be seen at special events at the Berlin fire brigade.
