From 1936 on, on the outskirts of Oranienburg, the concentration camp ("KZ") Sachsenhausen was established. As model camp in close vicinity to the imperial capital, Berlin, it held a exceptional position within the system of concentration camps. Until 1945, 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned at KZ Sachsenhausen. Tens of thousands of them were murdered or died because of the inhuman treatment.
From 1945 to 1950, there was the Soviet Special Camp No. 7 at the core area of the former concentration camp. At least 60,000 people were imprisoned, now by the Soviet Secret Service, at least 12,000 died of hunger and disease.
Since 1993, the memorial site, which was opened in 1961, belongs to the Stiftung Brandenburgische Gedenstätten (Foundation of Brandenburg Memorial Sites). Ten permanent exhibitions inform on the history of the concentration camp as well as on the Soviet Special Camp. The following aspects of the history of the concentration camps are covered: The Jewish detainees, the "everyday life" of the detainees, the camp prison, Oranienburg concentration camp, the history of the memorial site, the infirmary barracks, murder and mass murder, town and camp.
The education service offers guided tours, project days, and, at the international youth venue "Haus Szczypiorski", seminars lasting several days on all aspects of the history of Sachsenhausen (registration required).
