The Replica Workshop is the world´s largest institution of its kind. Replicas mainly from items in Berlin´s museum, but also from European museums, have been produced here for over 150 years. As a result the workshop represents a unique element in the cultural and architectural history of Berlin´s museums.
Plaster is the best material for reproducing the finest nuances and sharpest details of the original form. The replica workshop, the oldest institution of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, creates in a unique way a "musée imaginaire", reaching from the findings of Troj by Heinrich Schliemann to the most important works of the ancient age, such as the Laocoön group, the almost complete Pergamon altar, to the art of Egypt with the bust of queen Nefertiti, the Middle Ages with the Bamberger Reiter, the Renaissance (Michelangelo), Schlüter´s Great Elector, Schadow´s Princesses´ group up to the early 20th century with Rodin´s Thinker.
Currently, there are about 7,000 exhibits at the stock catalogue. It is unique that potential buyers can choose between all exhibits as models for making a replica. The plaster casts get offered either untreated in white, or painted close to the original´s painting. Besides this, there is also the opportunity to order casts out of a material insusceptible to humidity or shock, or in bronze.
At the show and selling room (at Sophie-Charlotten-Str. 17-18, 14059 Berlin, close to Charlottenburg Palace), there is a representative selection of plaster and bronze casts. Don´t hesitate to ask the employees of the replica workshop for special requests.
