The Heimatverein Zehlendorf, founded in 1886, is in charge of both the museum and archive which are located since 1973 at the old schoolhouse from 1828. The first landlord of the building was Ernst Ferdinand Schäde, who lived and worked, from 1793 on, as teacher at the village school for more than 62 years. In 1836, he wrote the first chronicle of the village. The visitors can walk through the historical rooms of the 19th century, thus having, supported by exhibits of the collection, an informative time travel through the changeful history of Zehlendorf up to its incorporation into Groß-Berlin in 1920.

At the former living-room of the teacher, photos and objects give an impression of the social and political development of Zehlendorf till the end of the Wilhelminian Era. At the archive, the visitor gets a broad insight into the history. Besides the local newspapers of the Berlin south-west, one finds here, systematically captured, the assets of the people, picture, maps, and local archives
