Already since 1738, there was a mill in close vicinity to Sanssouci Palace. Frederick William II. comissioned to replace the wind mill by a bigger mill with a stone base and a gallery, based on Dutch models (1787/91). At the second half of the 19th century, the grain mill stopped milling. In World War II, the mill burnt down up to the stone base. Only at the end of the 20th century, the building was reconstructed and turned into a museum. Since spring 2003, within the activities of the museum, like in former times, various grain products can be made - but only if there is enough wind. The basement of the mill provides, beside the shop with various mill products, information on mills in Brandenburg and Berlin. On the first three floors of the stone tower, exhibitions on the science of mills are shown. At the third floor, there is an exit to the mill´s gallery. From here, one has a beautiful view on the Neue Palais, Park Sanssouci, and the Potsdam urban landscape. From here as well, one can climb to the mill technical area (grain floor and sieving floor).
