Founded in 1986 by the art dealer, collector and artist Hans Pels-Leusden, the Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum shows a permanent collection the works of Käthe Kollwitz, who was born in 1867 (Königsberg). Having lived and worked for more than 50 years in Berlin, Käthe Kollwitz died in 1945 in Moritzburg near Dresden. Twice a year, special exhibitions with works of other artists relating in various ways to Käthe Kollwitz are shown.

The museum´s holdings contain 200 drawings and graphic works, several of which are well-known, for example, the lithography Brot! (1924), as well as 15 original posters and 15 sculpures. The collection of Self-portraits (1988/89 - 1938) as well as the woodcut series War (1922/23), works relating to the theme of Death (1903 - 1942) and finally the Memorial to Karl Liebknecht (1919/20), emphasize the fine quality of this collection.

Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum Berlin is located in the first private home built in the Fasanenstraße in 1871. Destroyed during the 2nd World War, the building underwent fundamental restoration during the nineteen eighties.

Neighboring the museum is the Literaturhaus with a café to which there is easy direct access through a special passageway connecting the museum´s garden with the garden of the café.

An enlarged version of the Kollwitz - sculpture Mother with dead son (Pietà)- may be seen in the Neue Wache, Unter den Linden.
