The museum Mitte Museum emerged in 2004 by the merging of the former cultural institutions Mitte Museum of Berlin, Heimatmuseum Tiergarten and Heimatmuseum Wedding. It is on two locations. At the head office Mitte Museum am Gesundbrunnen, all archive, library, and object assets are concentrated. By this, one of the biggest regional historical collections emerged, with about 10,000 text and scripture documents, more than 70, 000 photographic documents, 600 pieces of art and graphics, and a collection of maps and objects. The regional historical reference library has almost 10,000 titles.

The permanent exhibition imparts aspects on the cultural, social, and everyday history of the Berlin centre. A historical class room shows, together with another part of the exhibition, the history of the former school house and its environment in the Berlin quarter of Wedding.

The museum does also use other ways to promote interest in "history in situ", such as lectures, "oral history“-projects, and town explorations. A museum education programme presents the museum as a cultural place of learning. The cooperation with groups and initiatives - especially with Heimatvereinen, i.e. associations which keep alive local traditions, - is an important element of local historical work.
