The museum village Museumsdorf Düppel shows, on an area of 12 hectares, a reconstructed medieval village ensemble with houses, store houses, workshops, fields, and gardens. The pile houses are on the ground plot of a settlement from the 13th century which was excavated here since 1967. The institution is also an archaeological experimental centre which researches the life in a medieval village and breeds old species to conserve them as gene resources. Thus, three-field crop rotation is cultivated, old useful and wild plants get planted, and domestic races are protected from extinction. Little by little, the houses and store houses get erected with techniques known from the Middle Ages.
Since 1975, the complex is a museum village. Mainly on Sundays, members of the Förderverein present various old handcraft techniques to the visitors, such as pottery and tar production. Several times a year, the Museumsdorf Düppel does organize special events and market days.
