Museumsportal Berlin

The house at Heynstraße 8 was built for the Pankow rattan manufacturer Fritz Heyn in 1893. At the stairwell, there is still the original, restores painting. Heyn and his family lived at the first floor, the so-called Beletage, where there is now the permanent exhibition on upper-class living around 1900; it is run by the Kommunale Museumsverbund Pankow. Due to the fact that two of Heyn’s daughters lived here until their deaths in 1972 without changing anything in the apartment, the original décor, and, partly, even the furniture, were conserved. The salon, the study with its rich moulding, and the wall and ceiling painting look like a hundred years ago. Parts of the apartment are also a typical “Berliner Zimmer”, a bathroom with tiled bath tube, a kitchen, and a tine chamber for the maidservant.
Special exhibitions show, basing on the Heyn family and other dwellers of this dwelling, the bourgeois life at the Berlin north-east around 1900. The listed ensemble of dwelling, front garden, and garden yard with an arbour can be visited during the opening hours of the museum.
