Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), honorary citizen of Berlin and member of the Akademie, is one of the best-known artists of the town. His drawings and graphical works, which show the life in basement dwellings and backyards, are million fold reproduced and popular till today. Unadorned, they show the situation in the workers´ quarters of the Wilhelminian era and the 1920s; therefore, they are of inestimable value for the understanding of the history of Berlin.
Initiated by the grand-grandson of the artist, Hein-Jörg Preetz-Zille, the Heinrich Zille Gesellschaft Berlin e.V. was founded in 1999 with the aim to found a museum for Zille in Berlin. On August 28, 2002 the Zille Museum was opened at the Nikolaiviertel in Berlin - exclusively privately financed and run by the Heinrich Zille Gesellschaft.
After an extense renovation and relaunch, the museum was reopened on April 5, 2007 with a new exhibition on extended space. Besides original drawings and lithographs, also photos by Heinrich Zille get shown.
