Berlin's Museum for contemporary art opened in the former railway station, Hamburger Bahnhof, in November 1996. This gave the Nationalgalerie (National Gallery) its first permanent home for its collection of contemporary art. Historical buildings with unusual height, modern extensions with geometric outlines and luminous ceilings offer ideal conditions for the presentation of modern art.

The collection consists of pieces belonging to the State Museums of Berlin and works from the private collection of Erich Marx. In addition, highlights from the Friedrich Christian Flick collection have been shown since 2004.
The base of the Marx Collection are pieces by world famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Anselm Kiefer and Joseph Beuys. The exhibition does not aim to present an historically anchored presentation of the collection, but instead a concept inclusive of all artists, media and pieces.
