The Musikinstrumenten-Museum des Staatlichen Instituts für Musikforschung (Museum of Musical Instruments) collects and presents instruments of the European art music from the 16th century till today and demonstrates theirs sounds in concerts and guided tours. Of about 3,000 instruments of the collection founded in 1888, one can see about 800.
Quite prominent is the collection of the Naumburger wind instruments, an almost complete set of instruments of a middle German Stadtpfeiferei (guild of town pipers) around 1600. Among the highlights, there are early cembalos and spinetes, for example from the company of the Familie Ruckers, the famous Bach cembalo, and its reproductions. String instruments of European masters like Stradivari, Gagliano, Stainer, Krouchdaler, woodwind instruments from Hotteterre, Denner, Quantz and others can be seen as well as a travel cembalo of Queen Sophie Charlotte of Prussia, flutes from Frederick II., Carl Maria von Weber’s hammer piano, an English organ from the company John Gray, and the biggest cinema and theatre organ of the European continent, the four manual “Mighty Wurlitzer”, which can be heard regularly in concerts.
