Chausseestraße 125 was the last home and working place of the writer and theatre man Bertolt Brecht and the actress and artistic director Helene Weigel. The vicinity of the theatre Berliner Ensemble and the view on the cemetery Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof with the graves of famous artists and philosophers persuaded the couple to rent two apartments here.
Bertolt Brecht lived here from October 1953 until his death August 14, 1956 at the first floor of the side wing and the rear building. The apartment offered enough space for many writing desks and for talks with his students. Now, it houses his estate library with more about 4.000 volumes which are now available to the users of the Bertolt-Brecht-Archive.
Helene Weigel lived first at rooms at the second floor of the side wing. After Brecht’s death, she gave them to the Bertolt-Brecht-Archive founded by herself. In 1957 she moved to the ground floor. She died on Mai 6, 1971.
The originally preserved rooms are a memorial site since 1978. You can visit them at guided tours.
The Brecht-Weigel-Gedenkstätte is an institution of the Akademie der Künste.
