In the eight rooms of the Hanfmuseum (Hemp Museum) – the only one in Germany – the genus Cannabis is explored from several viewpoints. Its meaning as intoxicant is treated as well, but not predominantly. Instead, the manifold use of this more than 10,000-year-old crop is presented, which is today re-gaining importance in economy and medicine.
After the presentation of the biological characteristics of the plant, there are explanations concerning the cultivation, growth, harvest, and processing during history. Already early, ropes and textiles were made out of hemp fibres. In the Middle Ages, hemp served to produce paper, on which the first books were printed by Gutenberg. Today, hemp is used, among others, as insulation material, for cosmetics, and for medicine. Finally, the exhibition goes into the ritual meaning of hemp in world cultures – from Jamaica to India. The last room informs on the current legal situation on hemp.
At the café, artists expose their works, and videos dealing with hemp are screened.
