The collections of the Winckelmann-Institute were founded in 1851, together with the foundation of the "Archäologischen Lehrapparats" (archaeological didactic apparatus)“ by Eduard Gerhard. In 1912, with the call of Georg Loeschcke, extended by a comprehensive collection of minor arts and by the Berlin plaster cast collection, the collections could be seen since 1921 in the - at that time biggest - archaeological university museum in Germany, which was created by the extension of the old main building at the avenue Unter den Linden. Rebuilt in 1950, and used for other purposes till 1998, there was, since 2000, a systematic reconstruction of the collection rooms at the second floor of the western wing, which first section was finished in 2001/02. Now, one can see here again the Minoan and Mycenaean hall with originals and replica of the most important art works of the Aegean bronze time, a room with plaster casts of the temple of Zeus and the Apollo temple in Bassai as well as the collection of ancient originals, mainly earthenware vessels from the whole Mediterranean, from the Neolithic Age till the Roman time. Ancient glasses, lamps, and terracotta complete this typical German university collection.
