The Steglitz Museum is located in an Art Nouveau mansion in one of the oldest streets in Lichterfelde. It is run by the Heimatverein founded in 1923. The permanent exhibition tells the history of the quarters Steglitz, Lankwitz, Lichterfelde, and Südende. It deals with the youth movement Wandervogel founded in 1901 in Steglitz and tells how the world´s first electric tram came to Lichterfelde. It follows the traces of people who lived here, like the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal and his brother Gustav, a builder of many Lichterfeld dwellings in a very special style.
Special exhibitions deal with topics like urban development and contemporary history, the construction of the Teltow Canal, the NS time and the end of war in Steglitz, but also recall forgotten artists. Tours and trips on the history of the town and the country, readings and lectures complement the programme.
Besides an extended library, the museum has a big archive on the urban history, a collection of historical postcards and photos as well as documentations on Steglitz personalities. Furthermore, it has historical address and telephone books and a big collection of maps. Fundamental parts of the collection can be called via internet.
