They shared the stage with the likes of Josephine Baker and Marlene Dietrich – with its reputation as Berlin’s best jazz band, the Weintraubs Syncopators caused a sensation after forming in 1924. They played their syncopated dance rhythms in Max Reinhardt’s cabaret, and Friedrich Hollaender brought them to the silver screen as the jazz band in The Blue Angel. After the Nazis came to power in 1933, the band embarked on an odyssey in exile which took them through the Soviet Union and Japan to Australia, where their career came to an end.
On the occasion of the Weintraubs Syncopators’ hundredth anniversary, the Berlin-based Jungle Jazz Band will pay them homage by bringing the raw, powerful sound of the early jazz era back to life.
With an introduction by Albrecht Dümling, author of Gorilla hat 'ne Villa im Zoo. The Weintraubs Syncopators between Berlin and Australia (2022).
