On 5 September 1972, the Palestinian terrorist group Black September stormed the quarters of the Israeli Olympic team at the Munich Games. The world watched live on television as eleven hostages were taken and later killed. To mark the approaching 50th anniversary of the attack on the Israeli delegation, the Jewish Museum Berlin is screening the film After Munich, which for the first time tells the story of the assassination and its aftermath from the perspective of four women who were directly affected by the events of that day: the athlete Esther Roth Shahamorov, the widow Ankie Spitzer, who lost her husband in the assassination, and Mossad undercover agents Sylvia Raphael and Marianne Gladnikoff.
In this documentary by Canadian filmmaker Francine Zuckerman, the four women look back on the moment that changed their lives forever. The film tells of intrigue and secret identities, love and death, conflict and reconciliation, war and peace, and raises many questions. What can we learn from the past and how does it impact on the present? How can we move on after such a tragedy? What is the human cost of war and terror?
The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Francine Zuckerman.
The languages spoken in the film are Hebrew, German, Norwegian and English. The film will be shown in the original version with English subtitles. The discussion will take place in English.
