Jean-Luc Godard achieved world fame in 1960 with the gangster film "Out of Breath". In this harshly realistic film, he tells the story of Michel Poiccard, who shoots a policeman in cold blood and is killed by the French police while trying to flee to Italy.
"Alphaville" is a dystopia that is not set in our usual reality, but in a futuristic illusory world. Absolute logic applies here, emotions are punished with death. Agent Lemmy Caution arrives in the city of Alphaville, which is controlled by the computer α-60. It plans to take over the world with a war. Lemmy Caution succeeds in attacking the computer's logic with an emotional question: The machine destroys itself. Lemmy Caution returns to his world, which corresponds to the reality we are familiar with.
The secret agent Lemmy Caution, whose name says it all, was an extremely popular character in France and Germany in the 1950s and 1960s, and his stories were featured in numerous films and comics. The tough agent solves his cases not only with violence, but often also with humor. Lemmy Caution is a relaxed counter-model to James Bond. He is portrayed by the American chansonnier and actor Eddie Constantine, who emigrated to Europe after the end of the Second World War. His trademark was to embody a tough-faced hero, which he repeatedly broke and satirized.
