Two new exhibitions at ZAK – Zentrum für Aktuelle Kunst

From 10.9.2022 two new group exhibitions are open for visitors at ZAK – Zentrum für Aktuelle Kunst.

We invite you to the opening of our new exhibitions at ZAK on 9.9.2022 from 7 p.m. The focus is on the exhibition “State of Emergency. Polish Photo Art Today” curated by Grażyna Siedlecka and Jens Pepper. On the upper floor, we present “Big City Baby”, another group exhibition that brings together Young Art from Berlin. The project emerged from a cooperation with the Weißensee School of Art and is directed by Prof. Pia Linz and Petra Trenkel. Members of the student initiative Kleine Humboldt Galerie (Lotta Feibicke, Nikolas Geier, Anna Latzko, Monique Machicao y Priemer and Saskia Schiemann) curated the exhibition.

obitop:biotope
trumpet: Liz Albee, Nikolaus Neuser | cello: Ulrike Brand
double bass: Jonas Gerigk, Meinrad Kneer | dance: Joséphine Auffray, Ingo Reulecke

Part 1 obitop 6:30 p.m. in front of the Proviantmagazin
Part 2 biotop 8.30 p.m. at the harbor

Today, the Spandau Fortress is a nature reserve that is home to a bat colony and where numerous plants have settled in the surrounding biotope. I am fascinated by the contrast between wartime architecture and nature reserve. The composition is therefore called “obitop:biotop” – from place of death to place of life. It contains static aspects, i.e. a formal concept, traditional musical notation and static playing positions, as well as dynamic aspects, such as the movement of the dancers in the space, graphically notated improvised elements, and interactions with the outside space. In “obitop:biotop” I am searching for a form of notation that combines composition, improvisation and concept and is open to site- and situation-specific influences.

ULRIKE BRAND is a cellist, performer and composer. She has developed new playing techniques and her own sound world on the cello. Her projects cross borders into the fields of language, dance and performance and into collaboration with visual artists. Her compositions are situated in the intermediate area of improvised and notated music. She writes essays and gives workshops and guest lectures. From 1987 to 1997 she was artistic director of Quaderni Perugini di Musica Contemporanea in Perugia, Italy. In 2016 she was a fellow at Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf, and in 2020 at Komponist:innenforum Mittersill. She has received numerous grants. Since 2018 she has been a lecturer for improvisation and conceptual composition at the Berlin University of the Arts. www.ulrikebrand-cello.com

Funded by the “Initiative Draussenstadt” of the Senate Department for Culture and Europe. The composition was made possible by a grant from the Musikfonds.
