While the Museum Barberini is showing the exhibition Kosmos Kandinsky. Geometric Abstraction in the 20th Century , which is dedicated to international developments in geometric abstraction from the 1910s to the 1970s, the Berlin Museum of Prints and Drawings is presenting Cosmos Blue Rider. From Kandinsky to Campendonk.
Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc were key figures in this group of artists founded in Munich in 1911. They began to move away from references to visible reality in their art - and found ways into abstraction. In addition to Kandinsky and Marc, works by Heinrich Campendonk, Natalia Goncharova, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Gabriele Münter are also on display. The exhibition thus shows the multifaceted prehistory of geometric abstraction, to which Kandinsky turned around 1920.
To mark the occasion, Andreas Schalhorn, curator of 20th century art at the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett, and Ortrud Westheider, director of the Museum Barberini, will be giving guided tours of Kosmos Kandinsky in Potsdam on March 20 and Kosmos Blauer Reiter in Berlin on April 10. The visit to both exhibitions invites visitors to get to know Kandinsky's various forms of abstraction and his artistic environment in Munich, Moscow, Paris and at the Bauhaus.
