In 1803, Ludwig van Beethoven purchased a fortepiano from the Parisian piano and harp maker Sébastien Érard, which is now the property of the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz. Apart from the not entirely clear circumstances of Beethoven's acquisition, it is of particular interest for Beethoven research and the interpretation of his piano works that the grand piano is an instrument with a push action, i.e. a so-called English action, which placed quite different demands on the piano virtuoso Beethoven than the bounce action that was common in Vienna at the time. Together with Chris Maene, the Belgian-Canadian pianist and music researcher Tom Beghin, one of the world's leading specialists in playing historical fortepianos, has examined, documented and reconstructed Beethoven's Érard grand piano as part of a research project at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent. With the help of this replica, completely new aspects of Beethoven's musical language are revealed to us.
Tom Beghin plays the Sonata in G major, Op. 64 (Paris, publ. 1805) by Daniel Steibelt and the Sonata in C major, Op. 53, "Waldstein", by Ludwig van Beethoven.
