Chausseestraße in Mitte is an example of the growth of the metropolis, of disruptions, disasters, new beginnings and the diversity of the city. At the beginning of the 19th century, the area was called "Fireland" because of the many smoking chimneys.
Prominent Berliners were laid to rest in the Französischer Friedhof and Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof cemeteries. Right next door is the home of Helene Weigel and Bertolt Brecht. A few blocks further on is the monumental BND building, which in turn stands on historic ground. And just before the end of the 1.7-kilometer-long street, East Berlin ended until 30 years ago.
Holger Schmale uses this street to tell the story of the city's journey through two centuries and five social systems
