Just a few days after Reinhard Heydrich took office as Deputy Reich Protector in Bohemia and Moravia in September 1941, the Czechoslovak government in exile in London decided to have Heydrich killed. After long preparations, Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík carried out an assassination attempt on Heydrich in Prague on May 27, 1942, as a result of which he died. The massive retaliatory measures taken by the German occupiers, known in Czech as "Heydrichiáda", included the destruction of the villages of Lidice and Ležáky.

In her lecture, Radka Šustrová shows that the assassination of Heydrich is still of great national significance in the Czech Republic today. It is seen as an act of resistance and self-assertion of the nation against the German occupation.
