Hardly any other state office for the protection of the constitution has made as many headlines as the one in Berlin. It is above all two confidants (V-Männer) of this service that have gone down in German history: Peter Urbach as an alleged arms supplier for German RAF terrorism and Ulrich Schmücker, who was murdered in circumstances that remain unexplained to this day, with the murder weapon turning up in a safe at the state office.

Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) has now put an end to the secrecy. She ensured that a research project was set up at the FU Berlin dedicated to the complex investigation. Political scientist Helmut Müller-Enbergs was entrusted with this delicate task. After two years, a mid-term review is now being carried out and the state of research presented to the public for the first time.

The Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) have already worked themselves up, at least in part and at great expense. This is anything but usual for intelligence services - and unique in Europe.
