In Greece and Germany, the past of the war is remembered differently. Our panellists discuss the divided memory and the effects on German-Greek relations.
In Greece, the memory of the occupation, forced labour and the Holocaust is overshadowed by the traumatic experience of the civil war (1946-1949). This only gradually changed after the end of the military dictatorship in Greece in 1974. In Germany, there was no interest in coming to terms with war crimes for a long time. The debate about reparations for war damages continues to burden German-Greek relations to this day.
