He made a career in the GDR. Determined and class-conscious, Günter Graessler went through everything the GDR had to offer in order to serve in one of the most successful and feared secret services – the Stasi. He became an officer in military reconnaissance in Markus Wolf’s troop: the GDR’s foreign intelligence service.
Big names in espionage such as Richard Sorge, Ruth Werner or the scouts of the Red Orchestra soon became heroes and formative role models for Graessler. He was the lead officer for agents who were supposed to spy on sensitive data in the Federal Republic, experienced betrayal and defeats.
Günter Graessler has now written an autobiography. Before him, some of his former colleagues had already done so. Unfortunately, this all too often resulted in a grandiose glorification of the GDR and the Stasi.
Günter Graessler is a man in German intelligence history who could tell something from the dark realm of espionage during the Cold War. Whether he will do the same – we are curious!
