We all know the phenomenon: no matter how hard we try, our food at home never tastes quite like it does in the restaurant round the corner, at a friend’s house or on holiday. But why is that? Why, for instance, does thyme in Germany taste differently to thyme in Greece or in Lebanon? And how does taste determine our relationship to food and places?

Together with the non-profit organisation Give Something Back to Berlin, we invite you to the Community Kitchen in Neukölln. There, we’ll cook together, exchange ideas and learn (from one another). And, of course, we want to find out why the same dish tastes differently wherever it’s cooked and what this has to do with regional peculiarities, but also with cultural and social affiliations. A variety of flavours enriches our lives – and ensures our emotional connection to a particular place. But how can we preserve this in the future?

“Futurium has left the building” is the motto for this summer: as part of our event series in June and July 2025, you can find Futurium at four special locations in Berlin. Here you can look into the various facets of our new thematic focus “Future Fields. Farming and Using the Land” from an urban perspective. The events will be organised with committed locals and present concrete approaches to shaping the future of our city. Each event will be dedicated to a new topic. Exchange everyday expertise, gain insights into research findings, try out new techniques and engage in unusual conversations!

Here you can find all the dates.
