Together with the ZOiS Center for East European and International Studies, the Museum Berlin-Karlshorst is organizing the event series Geschichte(n) schreiben: The Second World War in Literature and Science.
Literature can expand historical concepts like few other means of expression. Compared to political or journalistic discourse, the novel can treat topics more freely and thus open up new perspectives on historical processes. It is often literature that sets new accents and changes the way we talk about history. At the same time, literature also reflects the society in which it was created.
In this series of events, the museum is devoting itself to memories of the Second World War. On three evenings, authors will read from their books and discuss the historical topics addressed in them with academics: Women in the Transmission of History, Deportation and Exile and Labor Camps/Gulag. Selected events are framed by thematically appropriate musical contributions.

Flight, expulsion, deportation
The event will be held in English. Simultaneous translation into German will be provided.
The deportation from the three Baltic countries to Siberia under Soviet rule shaped the lives of individuals and still haunts the collective memory today. We will talk to the translator of Dalia Grinkevičiūtė's historical biographical notes and the author of a recently published graphic novel about the experience of deportation. Together, we will explore how memories of exile and trauma are passed down between generations, opening up new perspectives on these historical experiences and their continued relevance.
With:
Vytene Muschick, translator of Dalia Grinkevičiūtė But the sky grandiose
Jurga Vilė, author of the Siberian Haiku
Dr. Félix Krawatzek, political scientist at the Centre for East European and International Studies and PI of the ERC project MoveMeRU. He will talk about research that has investigated how memories of expulsion and deportation are passed on between generations in Estonia.
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Gwendolyn Sasse, Director at the Center for East European and International Studies
