Taipei, a metropolis of millions with its innumerable open-air kitchens, street food stands, and elegant restaurants is the setting for Ang Lee’s classic film Eat Drink Man Woman (1994). The main character is Mr. Zhu: widower, master chef, and father to three grown daughters with whom he shares a home. On Sundays, he cooks for them, spending hours fileting, blanching, grilling, kneading, seasoning, flambeeing, and presenting dishes of shrimp and duck, his gray head bent over pots and pans surrounded in steam and smoke. He is fighting to keep his family together, and cooking is his way of showing fatherly love. Ang Lee’s Eat Drink Man Woman is the story of a generational conflict between tradition and modernity and a touching melodrama about basic human needs: food and love.
Star chef Tim Raue personally selected this film classic for the Summer Cinema series at C/O Berlin. Following the screening, you will enjoy an exclusive dinner by and with Tim Raue. The three-course meal and selection of drinks and wines are inspired by Ang Lee’s film. Tim Raue and Thomas Struck, Curator of the Culinary Cinema section at the Berlinale film festival, will be your hosts for the evening.
