main content start,

Human Commodity - Ware Mensch is a new acoustic bicycle opera that looks behind the facades of some Berlin buildings and their history of forced labor during the Nazi regime.

Rent a bike and follow a special route from Schöneweide to Plänterwald and back. The voices of young people talking about their dreams for the future alternate with those of former residents who tell you about the background of the nine sites of forced labor as they pass by.

The music and sounds were produced and collected by Kaffe Matthews, who then wove these fragmented dichotomies into a compositional whole. Thus, the Sonic Bike is an instrument that plays sounds and music that change depending on where you are riding. Each new audio fragment is triggered by previously mapped zones along that particular route.
