main content start,

On June 27, 1976, a Palestinian-German commando hijacked an Air France plane shortly after take-off from Athens. the plane was taken via Benghazi (Libya) to Entebbe (Uganda), where the hostages were freed a few days later by Israeli special forces. The aim of the commando was to free imprisoned "freedom fighters" from prisons in Israel, Germany, France and Switzerland. In his book "Im Schatten der 'Landshut'. Die Geschichte der Flugzeugentführung nach Entebbe", which will be published in summer 2024, Robert Wolff examines this culmination point of transnational armed connections between West German urban guerrilla groups and armed Palestinian networks of violence, which has been largely forgotten by the German public. How did the German members of the now almost forgotten International Revolutionary Cells come up with the idea of an airplane hijacking mainly directed against Israel? Why did the International Revolutionary Cell wage an (un)declared war against Israel? And what blind spots about the events before and in Entebbe still exist today?

Lecture and panel discussion with Robert Wolff (Wiesbaden) and Petra Terhoeven (Göttingen); moderator: Kristina Meyer (Berlin).

The series "Contemporary History in Dialogue" takes place in cooperation with the Institute of Contemporary History Munich-Berlin.
