Book presentation: Prof. Dr. Wolf Gruner
Moderation: Dr. Karoline Georg
(Together with the German Resistance Memorial Center)
In his book Resisters (2023), Wolf Gruner tells the stories of five Jewish people - a businessman, a housewife, a real estate agent and two young people - who resisted persecution in Germany and Austria between 1933 and 1943. Each of these stories represents a category of individual resistance: written protest, verbal protest, challenging Nazi propaganda, disregarding anti-Jewish laws and measures and self-defense against physical attacks. Overall, the stories contradict the still widespread idea of the passivity of German Jews during the Holocaust. At the same time, they demonstrate the harsh reactions of the Nazi state to the numerous individual acts of Jewish resistance.
