With Ilka Voermann, curator of the exhibition, head of the Graphic Collection
The artist Käthe Kruse (*1958) has been an integral part of the West Berlin art scene since the early 1980s. As a member of the well-known collective "Die Tödliche Doris", she worked from 1982 to 1987 in the border area between performance, music, text, painting and film. The group thus positioned itself as a counterweight to the city's established art scene. In her solo projects too, Käthe Kruse has maintained her cross-genre work and deliberate dilettantism, developing expansive installations that combine different media and forms of expression. Her starting point is often everyday objects, which she materially alters and thus ascribes new meanings to. Käthe Kruse's works are often closely linked to her personal experiences, but also refer to problems and issues affecting society as a whole, such as domestic violence, abortion and war.
The presentation at the Berlinische Galerie is the first comprehensive institutional exhibition in Berlin to pay tribute to the work of Käthe Kruse from the 1980s to the present day.
