with Antonia Wolff, Research Associate at the Artists' Archives
The exhibition is the first comprehensive tribute to the Hungarian contribution to Classical Modernism in the German capital. Berlin plays a special role in the history of Hungarian art and culture: even before the First World War, Hungarian artists used the growing metropolis as an exhibition stage where they could present themselves to an international audience. After reactionary forces put an end to the political reorganization of Hungary in 1919, the cosmopolitan Berlin of the Weimar Republic proved to be an exile for progressive artists. On the Spree they found a place of creative freedom and showed great presence in various contexts of the avant-garde. Berlin influenced many Hungarian artists just as much as they influenced the art scene. The central aim of the exhibition is to make this mutual cultural inspiration known again. It brings together paintings, graphic works, sculptures, photographs and architectural drawings and enriches the perception of art with artistic achievements from East Central Europe.
