We are celebrating the 250th birthday of the writer and salonnière Rahel Varnhagen, and we would like to invite you to tune in to the kultur café in the Jewish Museum Berlin.
Rahel Levin (later Varnhagen) was already inviting young intellectuals, rising scholars, musicians, and writers to her parents’ house at Jägerstraße 54 in Berlin. She was a coveted conversation partner and was able to bring the most diverse talents and characters together in a discussion. Her curiosity, sympathy, and her understanding of artistic and social life are what made an invitation to her gatherings so desirable.

Our new podcast series has a culinary flavor with a dash of cultural history. Part 2 focuses on Rahel Varnhagen, salonnière, woman of letters, and the author of countless letters and diary entries whose 250th birthday we are celebrating this year.

Let’s take a seat at the table and listen to what Birgit Claus, director of the museum café kultur, and Ulrike Sonnemann, library director, have to say about this interesting woman, emancipation, food culture, and the lives of Jewish women 250 years ago.

For part 2, we’ve invited Inka Bertz, a curator of the new Core Exhibition, to the table, along with Dorthee Nolte, whose book will be published on the occasion of Rahel Varnhagen’s birthday. Birgit Claus will offer culinary delicacies to go along with the discussion.
