Rebellion hinter der Mauer
© Dirk Mecklenbeck

The graphic novel "Rebellion Behind the Wall" (Ch. Links Verlag) tells the real-life story of friends Dirk, Heiko, Raik and Andreas. Growing up in Halle (Saale), they rubbed up against the conditions in the GDR as schoolchildren and stood out as metal fans with leather trousers and studded belts. They rebelled, boycotted the elections and refused to do military service. Their only prospect: an application for "permanent emigration".

As part of the new exhibition "Heavy Metal in the GDR" at the Museum in der Kulturbrauerei, the two authors Raik Adam and Dirk Mecklenbeck present their graphic novel - with music, films and photos from their lives.

RaikAdam, born in 1964, grew up in Halle (Saale) in a Protestant home, trained as a saddler, applied to leave the country in 1984, moved to West Berlin in 1986, graduated from a school for adult education in Berlin-Kreuzberg in 1989. Since then he has been a globetrotter and entrepreneur.

Dirk Mecklenbeck, born in 1966, grew up in Halle (Saale), trained as a carpenter, applied to leave the country in 1986, moved to West Berlin in April 1989. in 1989, like Raik Adam, he was one of the activists who took action against the Berlin Wall in 1989. Since 2002 he has lived as a freelance artist in Berlin-Kreuzberg and Neukölln.

In cooperation with the Berlin Wall Foundation.
