At this event, outstanding individuals from all over the world will be reporting on what they themselves have experienced and suffered in their struggles for open and fair societies. We’ll be shedding light on the role, task and state of civil society. And we’ll be gathering together ideas that offer inspiration on how every single one of us can actively fight for democracy.

A cooperation between Futurium and the charity Brot für die Welt (Bread for the World).

According to the latest Civil Society Atlas, only 14.5 per cent of the global population still live in countries where they’re more or less free to speak their minds, gather together freely and fight largely unhindered against injustice. A study by the Bertelsmann Foundation suggests that the number of authoritarian governments is constantly on the rise: merely 67 of the 137 countries investigated are still democracies. Open societies with civil liberties and opportunities for political participation and critical involvement can by no means be taken for granted.

This makes all the more important the role of civil society – that is, the activities of people who fight to ensure that human rights are upheld, minorities are protected and spaces for engagement are kept open. As part of a cooperative event organised by Futurium and Brot für die Welt on 6 December, our House of Futures will be offering a platform to such people. We’ve invited outstanding individuals from around the world who will join us either live on site or tune in from abroad.

Our guests are from Hong Kong, Togo and Greece. Their perspectives will be complemented by experts from the academic world and from Brot für die Welt.

The evening will be moderated by Nadine Hadad.
