Alongside Wörlitz Palace, the Marble Palace is home to the second largest historical Wedgwood collection outside England. It goes back to King Frederick William II's enthusiasm for the antique, classicist-cool creations of this English manufactory. in 1774, Josiah Wedgwood succeeded in developing an earthenware mass that could be evenly colored with metal oxides. The colored Wedgwood products were decorated with white relief scenes from ancient mythology in keeping with the taste of the time. Between 1792 and 1796, Frederick William II acquired a large number of Wedgwood vessels to decorate the fireplaces in the Marble Palace, all but a few of which have been preserved in situ. Get to know the special secrets and technical features of this exquisite collection and discover its significance for the aesthetics of interior design around 1800.
