Robert Capa, Berlin Sommer 1945, Blick von der Quadriga © Robert Capa Archive at the International Center of Photography, Magnum Photos

Robert Capa (1913–1954) was one of the twentieth century’s great photographers. His images of the battlefields of Europe have found their way into our collective visual memory. Virtually unknown, in contrast, are the six hundred shots he took of Berlin in the summer of 1945 while still wearing a US serviceman’s uniform. These provide a subjective but detached glimpse of the newly liberated city and its residents: the extent of the destruction, the presence of Allied soldiers, and Berliners of all ages—but
particularly the city’s children.

Seventy-five years after Europe’s liberation from the Nazis, some 120 images from this special collection of Berlin photographs will be shown together for the first time. They trace the path Capa might have taken through the city in that fateful summer of 1945:
days that brought about a shift in his career as well as in his life.
