Vernissage

How many people on earth eat with a knife and fork, how many with fingers and hands? When and where was the tin can invented - or margarine? What is the typical life of a conventionally raised fattening pig, compared to a pig from an organic farm? And in which months is the much-cited "season" in Germany for which vegetables?
The new CULINARIUM in the freshly renovated horse stables from the early 19th century presents itself as a unique new location with a multifunctional usage concept. Germany's first permanent exhibition on the cultural history of food forms a strong new accent in the leitmotif of the Domäne Dahlem. "From the Field to the Plate", which is also the title of the exhibition, takes visitors on a journey from 1850 to the present day. At hundreds of exhibits, installations, stagings and media stations, visitors can discover that "nutrition - much more than eating". Thanks to the varied design, the wealth of information on three floors arouses curiosity again and again and awakens the desire to discover. And: the attractive exhibition rooms can also be rented for external events with suitable offers!
On the top floor, a special adventure area awaits the little visitors. In the Children's Domain, hands-on stations invite them to actively discover and try things out. On the candy bike, for example, visitors can experience how much movement is "contained" in a single piece of candy by pedaling themselves. In addition, a red "children's track" runs through the entire exhibition, presenting all topics in language and design suitable for children. For adults, all texts are bilingual in German and English throughout.
The new presentation has already received several national awards, including as a lighthouse project in the federal competition "Ideas for the Education Republic" and the Nutrition Culture Prize of the University of Kassel.
