The Museum of Prehistory and Early History offers a tour through the oldest epochs of human history on the upper floor. With its unique collections on the prehistory and early history of Europe and the neighbouring Asian regions, it succeeds in vividly illustrating the major lines of development in early European history with outstanding originals.
The tour on level 3 begins in the Red Room, which recreates the ambience of a late 19th century exhibition and shows the origins of important holdings of the prehistoric collection. In stark contrast to this is the modern presentation in the following room on archaeology in Berlin, which uses recent finds to show what archaeologists today are pulling out of the capital's soil with the help of modern methods. Immediately afterwards, it's back to the earliest chapters of human history. In the Stone Age Hall, visitors are greeted by the famous 11-year-old Neanderthal boy from Le Moustier in France and the popular moose from Berlin's Hansaplatz. The second half of the hall shows the transition to agriculture and animal husbandry with magnificent finds from the Neolithic period. In the Bronze Age Hall, large display cases with impressive exhibit montages and a three-dimensional view of the oldest battlefield in human history form a processional route to the famous Berlin Gold Hat. At the end of the tour on level 3, the Iron Age cultures are also presented in the context of the Mediterranean cultures with Hallstatt princely tombs and Latène finds complexes.
A special journey awaits visitors between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age: Our time machine takes us back to a landscape by the river and observes its inhabitants over the millennia. Man and environment live in an impressive symbiosis and archaeology can now not only assign objects to their periods of origin but also determine the reciprocal influences of man and environment. Many of the exhibits from the new presentation are hidden in the drawings created especially for the exhibition, which were animated for the film sequences, and it becomes clear what role they played in the lives of our predecessors. This gets to the heart of the basic idea behind this level of the exhibition: we want to take the visitor on an exciting journey to the early epochs of human history in Europe.
