At the present time it seems as if the decision for a liberal and representative democracy as the political system of government is seriously endangered by a concurrence of several different developments. Authoritarian and anti-pluralistic political parties are gaining strength not only in countries of the former Eastern bloc, but also in nations in which democracy is upheld by centuries-old traditions. And it appears that people’s trust in democracy as the political form of government is also waning in Germany.

In the exhibition we are focusing the question of “What is democracy?” on the historical example of the Weimar Republic. We are interested in how the Weimar Republic dealt with the question of what democracy is and should become, and how essential factors of democracy evolved. And thus, out of our present-day situation in which democracy has to be redefined, a new narrative of the history and stories of Weimar has emerged.
