The Berlin Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) looks back on a history of more than 350 years. Its main location is the Altes Museum. Since 2011, the main floor has offered an impressive panorama of Greek art from the 9th to the 1st century BC. Sculptures of the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods, outstanding vases, funerary and votive reliefs, architectural fragments, small art and jewelry are grouped thematically.
Highlights include the statue of the so-called Berlin Goddess, the bronze Praying Boy and the Enthroned Goddess from Taranto. Etruscan and Roman art and culture are presented on the upper floor. On display are ceramics, urns and sarcophagi, mummy portraits, Roman sculptures and mosaics. Unique are the busts of Caesar and Cleopatra and the silver treasure of Hildesheim.
In the neighboring Pergamonmuseum you can see the famous architectures, which come from the Berlin excavation campaigns at the end of the 19th century. The main attraction is the Pergamon Altar from the 2nd century BC. Its large sculptural frieze, a masterpiece of Hellenism, depicts the battle of the gods against the giants. In the adjoining hall to the south, the Market Gate of Miletus (c. 165 AD) is on display, and in the hall on the north side, examples of Greek architecture.
Works from the Collection of Classical Antiquities can also be found in the Neues Museum, including the halls on Cyprus (on the first floor) and the Roman provinces (on the 1st floor).
Due to construction work, the hall with the Pergamon Altar and the Hellenistic hall are closed until probably 2025.
